Safety information
As you can imagine, the passability of routes in a mountainous environment is strictly linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before departure, check the status of the route by contacting the refuge managers on your route, alpine guides, natural park visitor centers, and tourist offices.
Roadbook
From Lago Smeraldo di Fondo, continue along the road, initially paved then unpaved, following signs for Malga di Fondo. After 7 km you reach the malga parking lot. From here, descend slightly along the same forest road to a hairpin bend near a stream. Take the forest road on the left that runs alongside the stream and climbs through firs until it intersects the SAT 500 trail with signs for Monte Macaion. Follow this trail, which cuts a hairpin bend, returns to the forest road, and then leaves it permanently to climb up to Forcola di Gaido. Continue along SAT 500 marker which in half an hour reaches Croce del Macaion, where you enjoy a wide panorama over Merano, Bolzano, Val d’Adige, and the Sarntal mountains. Continue for a short stretch towards the summit and once you reach the SAT 513 marker, take it downhill until reaching altitude 1650 where, on the right, in a wide clearing, you see Baita Genzianella. After about 100 meters, leave the SAT 513 marker to follow a tractor road on the right without markers which passes in front of the hut and soon reaches Malga Manzara di Fondo. From there, follow the forest road and with a regular descent reach Malga di Fondo.
