This excursion is extremely varied and offers multiple places to stop and have a break: the refuges with typical dishes upon arrival, a sun-kissed malga mountain hut along the way, a panoramic terrace over the Dolomites and the historic Mendola Pass. There are no technical difficulties or any major differences in altitude but you still need to be quite fit to tackle the just under 14 km-long trail.

    Author’s recommendation

The view from Mount Penegal is even more amazing from the early afternoon, when the sun is high or behind you and lights up the Dolomites in all their splendour.

The itinerary begins in Regole di Malosco, which you can reach by car from the towns of Malosco or Ronzone. It is a large clearing in the woods housing 3 refuges offering excellent local food. From the car park, take trail marker SAT508 which climbs up the forest road to the sun-kissed Malga di Malosco. The SAT508 gravel road continues, leading up to Mount Penegal Peak. The large terrace of the Panorama Hotel Penegal offers one of the most spectacular views of Val di Non. Then take trail SAT500 on the right descending to Mendola Pass, which offers more spectacular views of the Dolomites and Lake Caldaro. From Mendola Pass, continue for a short section on the pavement on the right side of the state road climbing down towards Val di Non and then climb up the small road to the majestic Villa Imperiale. Follow the SAT 515 signs and cross a flat green wood until you reach trail SAT 514; take it on the right to make your way back to Regole di Malosco.
