Safety information
The ledge that rises from the base of the canyon towards Dovena is equipped for a stretch with some metal steps and a metal cable. It is not a via ferrata but an equipped path to be tackled with due care. The environment is very airy and the path in some sections exposed, so it is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.Tips and suggestions
In the villages of Tret and Dovena there are fountains with potable water.Roadbook
After leaving the car in the picnic area clearing on the SS43 road just before the junction for Tret and the eponymous waterfall, continue along the paved road leading to the village of Tret. At the first curve on the left, you will notice a green barrier and a dirt road that also shows signs for the Jacopeo Way. Take this slightly downhill dirt road which coincides with the old road that connected the town of Fondo to the Palade Pass. After less than a kilometer, on the right you will see a path that descends steeply and zigzags down to the bottom of the canyon. The path is called "senter del verm" and matches trail marker number 543.
Once you reach the bottom of the canyon and the Novella stream, follow the course of the stream south until you find trail marker 522, which you take to the right to cross the stream. The path continues alongside the stream for a stretch before tackling the climb up the rocky wall of Mondino. The first part of the climb is on metal steps that aid the ascent, then continue along the rocky ledge. The most exposed sections are equipped with a metal cable and handrail. The path passes at the base of a famous cliff where climbing is practiced, then enters the forest and emerges in the small village of Dovena.
Exiting the forest, continue straight to the fountain, then turn right following the signs for trail marker 522. The road is paved for the first part and gradually climbs to a three-way junction where you follow the dirt road to the right, still on trail 522, which begins descending towards the canyon. The start of the descent is gentle before becoming a fairly steep switchback. Before reaching the bottom of the canyon and the stream, take the path on the left that descends to the stream, climbs a steep forest section, then joins the walkway leading to the Tret waterfall. Here you can choose to take this walkway to the right uphill to return to Tret or continue to the left downhill to reach the Tret waterfall in about 15 minutes.
After refreshing yourself at the foot of the waterfall, retrace the path you have just followed, which consists of a series of steps now climbed upwards, then continue straight ahead ignoring other forks until you reach the center of Tret. Immediately, you will find Albergo Aurora in case you want to stop.
To reach the car, continue along the paved road on the right which goes down through the village, then slightly climbs crossing meadows where there is a picnic area and an enclosure with animals. Continue straight until you reach the SS43 road where you parked the car.
