The Pian della Nana is a huge plateau at over 2000 meters altitude, about five kilometers long and one kilometer wide. Walking among the pastures of Pian della Nana, it is easy to observe a truly remarkable floral abundance that cheerfully colors the meadows where sheep, goats, horses, donkeys abound, and marmots are very easy to spot.

It is not a difficult route per se, but it could have some hazards in bad weather along the short descent towards Pra Castron where some rocky blocks must be faced. Along the whole itinerary, the view stretches over the broad Pian della Nana valley and often there are fossil remains of life in Jurassic seas.

    Safety information

As you can imagine, the passability of trails in a mountain environment is closely linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural events, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before setting out, check the condition of the path by contacting the managers of refuges along your route, mountain guides, visitor centers of natural parks, and tourist offices.

CAI / SAT trail difficulty classification: http://www.visittrentino.info/legenda-difficolta-cai

    Roadbook

Difficulty: EEA (experienced hikers with equipment)

Path 337 leads to the grassy and panoramic summit of Monte Peller, with an easy but steep and slightly exposed route in some sections (steel cable as protection), then descending into the meadows of Malga Tassulla. From here, path 336 (a track through the meadows) leads towards Passo della Nana, from which you climb halfway up with a slight and constant incline along the ridge Cima Cesta-Cima Nana. The E-W ridge between Sasso Rosso and Cima Uomo is reached by climbing fine debris on a good path, then a rapid descent to Passo di Pracastron among isolated towers and rocky ledges. In this area, there are numerous geological monuments that testify to the troubled architecture of ancient ocean floors (underwater landslides and submarine canyons of Sasso Rosso).

A downhill section on path 310 leads to the junction with path 306: this path takes you around Cima Uomo climbing a semicircular route on the comfortable ledges of the mountain, to cross Passo dell'Uomo where you can observe a deep network of karst crevices. This part of the path offers the best views of Lake Tovel, which appears as a very distant gem set in the deep fir forest.

To descend to Pian della Nana, calmly follow the 306 trail marks on the rocky blocks westward and then southwest, which will lead you to the only small valley allowing to overcome the rock jump. This section may present orientation problems in bad weather because the trail marks are rather sparse at the time of writing these notes. Once at Malga Tassulla, you can avoid climbing Monte Peller again by instead taking roads 336-313 back to the starting point.

    Difficulty: EE (experienced hikers)

If instead of taking path 337 that ascends to the summit of Monte Peller, you choose to bypass the summit at its base by taking path 308 until it intersects with path 336, you avoid the exposed section with the cable and the difficulty.

    Public transport

By public transport it is possible to reach the town of Cles. From there, a private vehicle is needed to drive on a 14 km dirt road leading to the parking just below Rifugio Peller.

    Directions

By car you reach Cles, the capital of the Val di Non. Drive through the town center and go up above Cles following signs for Località Bersaglio / Rifugio Peller. Just beyond Località Bersaglio, take the dirt road on the right with signs for Rifugio Peller. Continue along this mostly paved road for 14 km until you reach the parking lot at Località Durigat. The road has uneven surfaces in parts, so it is recommended to use a high-clearance vehicle.

    Parking

A large parking area is located in Durigat locality, near the homonymous small lake. Continuing along the dirt road on the right towards Rifugio Peller, there are other parking spots from which the refuge is reachable within 5 minutes on foot.
