The route is simple and presents no difficulties except for the steady climb to reach the lake. The proposed loop continues past the lake to reach a small mountain called Doss de Solomp and then returns to the starting point. Those who prefer a gentler slope can rely on the longer but less steep forest road instead of the path proposed here which goes directly up to the lake.

    Author’s recommendation

Once you arrive at the lake, it is worth taking a small 5-minute detour to enjoy a warm mulled wine and a slice of strudel in front of the warm fireplace of the cozy malga of San Felice / Felixer Alm. Here we are on the border with the province of Bolzano, so don’t be surprised if you hear a particular German dialect!

    Safety information

The hike is pleasant even if there is no snow. However, we recommend equipping yourself with small crampons to avoid falls on icy stretches.

You should always be careful and carefully assess whether it is safe to cross the frozen surface of the lake!

As you can imagine, the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to contingent conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before leaving, check the route status by contacting the refuge managers on your route, mountain guides, visitor centers of natural parks, and tourist offices.

    Tips and suggestions

Before undertaking a hike on the snow, always check the avalanche bulletin here!

    Roadbook

After leaving the car at the large parking lot in the Plazze di Tret area, continue uphill following the signs for the lake, SAT trail 512. The paved road turns into a dirt road and after about 500 meters you will notice the signage for the lake continuing on a path. Take the obvious trail which crosses the forest road several times until it coincides with it in the final ramp leading to the lake.

It is worth making the circuit of the lake from the left bank, from where the path leading to the nearby malga of San Felice also branches off.

Continue following the SAT 511 signage and shortly after leave the cart track that descends to the Fondo malga to take the SAT 517 path on the right that leads to the foot of Doss de Solomp. To reach the summit of this small mountain, just follow the obvious tracks on the snow. Then leave the 517 trail to turn right onto the cart track heading towards the Crozze area and reconnect with the SAT 512 trail that was taken at the beginning of this route. Follow it downhill to the left and in a few minutes you return to the parking lot. Here you can end the day with refreshments at the welcoming Albergo Scoiattolo and its delicious cakes.

    Equipment

Being a very popular destination, the track to the lake is always packed and simple crampons would be enough to reach it (except right after snowfalls). However, fewer walkers push up to the Doss de Solomp, so the use of snowshoes is recommended.
