From the square, continue towards the cemetery and take the CAI SAT trail no. 539 which, after a flat stretch through a cool larch forest, descends via steep switchbacks to the bottom of the canyon formed by the Rio San Romedio. This canyon is one of the deepest in Val di Non, and at the upper part, it widens into a river valley with lush vegetation. Upon reaching the bottom of the gorge, an exciting walk through an environment rich in echoes of history and spirituality begins: only by this path, in fact, before the advent of mechanical means, was it possible to reach the village of Sanzeno and, for pilgrims, the Sanctuary of San Romedio. Shortly after, you arrive at the parking lot at the foot of the sanctuary, which can be reached in a few minutes via a steep pebble path.
The Sanctuary of San Romedio, always a pilgrimage destination for visitors from all over the world, perches on a rock spur over 70 meters high overlooking the Rio San Romedio valley. It consists of a complex of seven chapels and small churches connected by a steep staircase of 131 steps. Near the Sanctuary, there is a wildlife area where some brown bear specimens are housed, according to legend, the faithful companion of the hermit. From the Sanctuary, it is possible to reach the historic center of Sanzeno on foot (15 minutes) or, in summer, by shuttle bus. Here, the Basilica of the SS. Anaunian Martyrs is worth a visit. Also, from the hermitage, after a short stretch of asphalt road, you can embark on a second scenic itinerary carved into the rock that leads in about an hour's walk to the Rhaetian Museum of Sanzeno, a center for archaeology and ancient history of Val di Non.
The return to the village of Don takes place by ascending the same path taken on the way out.
