Malga Tuena is a fantastic malga mountain hut located in the wildest heart of the Brenta Dolomites. From here, a trail quickly descends to Lake Tovel.

    Author’s recommendation

In the case of families, one suggestion might be to visit Lake Tovel and then have one adult climb back up to the Malga to pick up the car (2 hours’ walk), while the other adult climbs down along the Glare Trail and you all meet up in Capriolo!

Malga Tuena is also a refuge, so anyone wanting to go on excursions in this corner of the Dolomites can stay here overnight!

    Roadbook

Driving from Tuenno, follow the signs to Lake Tovel. Once you reach Capriolo, you will find the first of the paid car parks for those wanting to go to Tovel. Right next to the car park, turn right and take the forest road leading up to Malga Tuena. This is a gravel road approximately 10 km long which is open to traffic during the months the malga mountain hut is open, in other words from mid-June to mid-September.

Continue until you reach the no entry sign straight after the hairpin bend. Leave your car on the side of the road and take the trail with signs to malga Tuena. This section of the trail does not have any steep slopes, and in some parts you will be able to see the green waters of Lake Tovel at the bottom of the valley. It should take you approximately 20 minutes to get to Malga Tuena.

Cross the pasture under the malga and take trail SAT 309 which climbs down to the shores of Lake Tovel in about 1 hour’s walk.

Make your way back to the departure point the same way you came.
