Chiesa di S. Silvestro sul Monte Totoga
The 13th century Church of San Silvestro overlooks the gateway to Valle di Primiero.
Located on Monte Totoga in Imer, the Church of San Silvestro is perched on a cliff overlooking Valle di Primiero. As proven during refurbishing works some few years ago, this worship venue dates back to the 2nd century, and has always been a landmark for the entire valley community. The citizens of Vanòi used to climb up here to beg Saint Silvester for sunshine, especially when rain would not stop and ruined their harvests. An 18th century document reveals a remarkable fact: this church, together with the churches of San Vittore in Tonadico, San Giovanni and Santa Romina in Mezzano, shape a cross - or "crosèra" in local vernacular - symbolically consecrating the valley.
The church features a 13th century fresco of Christ the Redeemer in a luminous almond-shaped halo together with four zoomorphic Evangelists painted by Rocco Naurizio in 1544. Another interesting fact is that the church is only opened on May 1 of each year, to celebrate the Mass.
