Collegiata di S. Maria Assunta
One of the most important Renaissance churches in Trentino.
An ancient parish church in the Romanesque-Gothic style, the monumental Collegiate church of Arco, with its imposing structure, dominates the town's entire historical town-centre, and is one of the most significant Renaissance-style churches in the region. First mentioned in 1144, it was demolished and rebuilt in 1613 based on the project by G. Maria Filippi di Dasindo to include several references to the Palladio, on the wake of the tradition of Roman basilicas with a lengthwise axis.
Its fourteen, powerful buttresses support the hall and the bell tower - 61 meters tall - and give the church a unique architectural look. The building also houses a number of important artworks and deserves a careful visit given its altars, altarpieces and the friezes decorating it. Its striking nave hosts eight side altars and a priceless canvass by Domenico Brusaorci.
