This Canyon is the widest in the Non Valley. The route is ideal on summer days, and those who want to can go as far as the cool Tret Waterfall.

The trail descends to the base of the canyon where the Rio Novella flows and then ascends the opposite side on scenic rock ledge equipped with handrails. This section of the trail is very scenic but exposed; we recommend reading the description below carefully.

    Author’s recommendation

Ideal hike in summer since the wall descending to the canyon is in shade in the morning while the ledge going up the opposite side goes into shade at 1 pm.

    Safety information

The ledge that climbs from the base of the canyon towards Dovena for a stretch has some metal steps and metal rope. This is not a ferrata but an equipped trail that should be approached with due care. The environment is very aerial and the path in some sections exposed, so it is not recommended for those suffering from vertigo.

    Tips and suggestions

Fountains with drinking water can be found in the villages of Tret and Dovena.

    Roadbook

After leaving the car in the widening of the picnic area on the SS43 state road just before the junction to Tret and the waterfall of the same name, continue along the small paved road that leads to the village of Tret. At the first bend on the left you will notice a green bar and a dirt road that also shows signs for the Jacobean Way. Take this slightly downhill dirt road that coincides with the old road that connected the village of Fondo to Passo Palade. After less than a kilometer, you will notice on the right a path that zigzags steeply down to the canyon floor. The path is called "senter del verm" and coincides with trail marker number 543.

Once you reach the bottom of the canyon and the Novella stream, you follow the course of the stream southward until you find trail marker 522, which you take to the right to cross the stream. The trail skirts the creek for a stretch more and then faces the ascent of the Mondino rock face. The first part of the ascent is on metal steps that aid the ascent and then continues along the rocky ledge. The more exposed sections are equipped with metal cable and handrails. The trail passes at the base of a famous cliff where climbing is practiced and then enters the woods and comes out in the small village of Dovena.

Coming out of the woods you porsegue straight to the fountain where you then turn right, always following the signs for trail marker 522. The road for the first part is paved and climbs gradually until you reach a crossroads where you follow the dirt road on the right, always with trail marker 522, which begins the descent to the canyon. The beginning of the descent is gentle and then becomes a fairly steep serpentine. Before reaching the bottom of the canyon and the creek you take the path on the left that descends to the creek, climbs a steep section of forest and then joins the boardwalk that leads to Tret Waterfall. Here you can choose to take this walk to the right uphill to return to Tret or you can continue left downhill to reach Tret Waterfall in about 15 minutes.

After cooling off at the foot of the waterfall, you take the path you just walked made up of a series of steps that you now face uphill and continue straight ahead ignoring the other forks until you reach the center of Tret. Immediately you come across the Albergo Aurora in case you want to take a break.

To reach the car, continue along the paved road on the right that descends through the village and then climbs slightly up through some meadows where there is a picnic area and an enclosure with animals. Continue straight until you come out on the SS43 highway where you had parked your car.
