Castelfondo - Borgo d'Anaunia

From its Roman origins to the fine country houses: discover the beauty of Castelfondo in Val di Non

Castelfondo - Borgo d'Anaunia

Castelfondo is a small village located high up in the upper Val di Non and is divided into three main parts: Villa, in the lower part, Plaz, in the middle, and Cologna, in the upper part. Elegant country houses alternate with Anaune style traditional country buildings. Some of the most interesting elegant residences include Casa Lorenzetti and Casa Dalla Chiesa - which is decorated with a Crucifixion frescoed by Gaspar Blattmirer in 1437 - as well as Castello di Castelfondo and Castel Vigna. The parish church of S. Nicolò was rebuilt between 1508 and 1530, and widened in the 20th Century.

The old name of the town was Castrum Fundi, meaning it was a Roman "castrum" (castle), a logistic base that lead off to the Castrin and Le Palude outposts by crossing the age-old arched Roman road, which is still recognisable today. These two outposts were the ultimate defence ramparts against the Barbarian invasions, and guarded the entire Val di Non plateau during the years of the Late Empire.
