Pomarolo

Amidst vines, apples, cherries and mills, under the sun of Pomarolo

Pomarolo
Pomarolo

The name suggests the main feature of the town and its environs. In fact, it derives from the Latin term "pomarium", i.e. fruit orchard. Still today, the surrounding countryside grows apples, vines and cherries. In the previous century it was renowned for its tobacco.
Alongside the town many streams, some of which now have been entombed, in the past drove the six mills (the oldest dating back to 1259) and to a textile industry that produced, among other things, the cloth for the monks' habits. The excellently preserved Basiano is the municipality's oldest district and is of Roman origins. Interesting are the ancient building used as town hall and the church of San Cristoforo that holds a finely made organ, deemed to be the best in the valley.
Leaning onto the crag, in Chiusole, is the small church of San Rocco dated 1636, with several 18th century paintings by local artists.
