Romeno is located on a sunny plateau surrounded by pines and criss-crossed by beautiful trails. Most probably its name comes from the word "Romani" or "Romaini", that is, a place inhabited by Roman immigrants settled among the local populations. A number of elegant houses can still be admired in the town, together with frescoes painted by Mattia Lampi, who settled in Romeno around 1720. A monument has also been dedicated to his son Giambattista, who was born here (1751-1830).
A visit to the three churches is also a must. The age-old altar-piece of the Assunta housed in the Parish Church was painted by Giambattista Lampi, and is a true Neoclassical masterpiece. The Church of S. Antonio features interesting frescoed cycles both indoor and outdoor, illustrating the story of Saint Anthony the Abbot. A number of Romanesque frescoes with a Byzantine flavour - the oldest in the Trentino area - are showcased in the Church of S. Bartolomeo. Although mention of this church can be traced back to 1191, it is perhaps even older.
