A comfortable hike that, through the woods, offers spectacular views of the Mondino canyon and the beautiful Tret waterfall.
Canyons are one of the most distinctive features of the Val di Non. This hike allows you to overlook one of the widest canyons in the valley, the "Mondino" canyon, and to reach its base where you can admire the lovely Tret Waterfall.
Author’s recommendation
This proposed hike starts from the village of Fondo and follows the old road that once led to the Palade Pass. Those who want to shorten the route and take a simple walk can drive to the hamlet of Tret and park after the Aurora hotel. From here, the waterfall can be reached in just 15 minutes.
The route is shaded in the morning, so in summer it is recommended to undertake it in the early hours of the day. In autumn and winter, however, the hike is pleasant in the afternoon.

As you can imagine, the passability of routes in a mountain environment is closely linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before leaving, check the status of the route by contacting the managers of the refuges along your path, alpine guides, visitor centers of natural parks, and tourist offices.
Roadbook
Starting just before Lago Smeraldo in Fondo, ascend the ramp on the left towards the botanical garden. Continue towards Hotel Milano and descend towards the state road where you need to be careful crossing it. Head towards a large carpentry whose access road also bears the yellow shell symbol indicating the passage of the Camino Jacobeo d’Anaunia. Here begins the old road that connected Fondo to the nearby hamlet of Tret and the Palade Pass.
The first short section is paved but just past the barrier, the road becomes dirt. The track continues mostly flat through a sparse forest with many panoramic points overlooking the deep canyon called Mondino and the houses of the Dovena hamlet built on top of the opposite canyon wall.
Continuing straight ahead, keeping an eye on the unmistakable yellow shell of the Camino Jacobeo, you reach the paved road leading to the hamlet of Tret and the Aurora Hotel. Beyond the hotel, you notice a fork on the trail: staying right, continue on the flat track that arrives at a panoramic point above the Tret waterfall. The road then continues to the German-speaking villages called San Felice and Senale.
Taking the path to the left instead descends quickly to the base of the waterfall where you definitely have a better view of the waterfall itself and the small lake that forms at its feet.
Return is along the same route as the ascent.
