The gorge walk runs along the bottom of a real canyon: it connects the historic center of Fondo and follows the Rio Sass stream up to Emerald Lake. It alternates wide clearings next to the stream and narrow passages in the rock on metal walkways. The finale is spectacular because it climbs up the waterfall that flows from the lake on a comfortable staircase and reaches the calm shores of Emerald Lake.

An easy and evocative free walk on the bottom of a gorge carved over millennia by the Rio Sass. A route for the whole family among vertical rock walls, waterfalls, suspension bridges, and ancient mills that leads to Emerald Lake, a basin with fresh and crystalline waters.

    Safety information

As you can imagine, the passability of routes in a mountain environment is strictly linked to current conditions and therefore depends on natural phenomena, environmental changes, and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this sheet may have changed. Before setting off, check the status of the route by contacting the relevant tourist office.

    Roadbook

From the parish church of San Martino in Fondo, descend to the stream near an ancient mill. From here, enter the valley carved in the rock by the Rio Sass which accompanies the entire walk in the gorge with its incessant sound. The watercourse is followed on a comfortable beaten path, occasionally encountering signs left by man, like an ancient mill with its large wheel still functioning today, and the wonders of nature. Then a narrower stretch begins, ending with a short footbridge and some metal steps down to the level of Emerald Lake. Once here, it is suggested to make the full circuit of the small but fascinating basin and then return the same way. On the return it is possible to exit into the center of Fondo, passing through the beautiful square hosting a large and precious water clock, and finally return to the church.
