The Road of Heroes

Following in the footsteps of the Great War, a hike with an important legacy to be walked with respect and awareness.

The Strada degli Eroi (Heroes' Road) is a roadway that climbs the Pasubio massif. Built during the First World War to provide the summit of the mountain with a safe and easy access route for motorised vehicles, the actual road is about 2 km long and starts from the Galleria d'Havet tunnel to the Achille Papa Refuge, but the entire length of the route (from the car park at Pian delle Fugazze to the Papa Refuge) is about 10 km.The entire Achille Papa Refuge - Pian delle Fugazze route is part of the European path E5 and the Sentiero della Pace.The terrain is natural, except for a few asphalted hairpin bends, with a winding path through the Val Fieno to climb with a fairly constant gradient that is never particularly challenging, except for the final stretch before the Galleria d'Havet, which is only a few dozen metres long. <p>During the Second World War, it was only a path and was later widened to allow easy access to the Sacred Area of Pasubio as an alternative to the Scarubbi road where the snow remains much longer due to the northern exposure.The name recalls the plaques placed on the rock face in honour of the 12 gold medals for military valour who fought on the Pasubio during the First World War.</p>
