The absence of challenging stretches, the harmony of the paths and the tranquility of Lake Tret make this hike a popular family choice.
Lake Tret is a favourite destination for locals in all seasons. It is easy to understand why: the lake can be reached in just 40 minutes on foot, its waters are suitable for swimming and nearby there is a mountain hut and a farmstead. In spring the meadows are a picture of golden buttons. In summer a dip in its waters is a healthy cure for one and all. In autumn, with fog and mist it takes on a mystical aspect. And in winter if the temperatures are low and the snow not yet abundant you can even skate there!

Lago di Tret is one of the favorite destinations for locals in all seasons. It's easy to understand why: the lake is reachable in only 45 minutes on foot, its waters are suitable for bathing, and nearby there is a refuge and a malga (mountain hut). In spring, the meadows turn into a sea of buttercups. In summer, a dip in its waters is a tonic. In autumn, with the fog, it takes on a mystical appearance. And in winter, if temperatures are low and snow struggles to arrive, you can even ice skate!
Author’s recommendation
The itinerary presented here proposes an out-and-back route with the circuit of the lake.
A few minutes' walk from the lake are the Malga di San Felice and the Rifugio Waldruhe, offering simple and genuine dishes strictly made in the "malga" tradition.
Near the parking lot is also the quiet and welcoming Albergo Scoiattolo. Its terrace immersed in the woods and the excellent homemade cakes are a worthy finale to a wonderful day in close contact with nature!

SCOIATTOLOSafety information
The itinerary presents no technical difficulties. Those who find walking on a path with stones and roots uncomfortable can choose to continue on the dirt road instead of cutting through the path as described here. Doing so reduces the steepness but lengthens the route. You should therefore calculate about an hour of walking to reach the lake on the dirt road.
Tips and suggestions
Lago di Tret lies on the border between the provinces of Trento and Bolzano. In fact, for nearby South Tyroleans, the same lake is called Felixer Weiher! Only 2 km after the village of Tret, continuing towards Passo Palade, you reach the village of St. Felix (BZ). Following the signs for Felixer Weiher, you reach the parking lot above the village and then continue on foot to the lake. The ascent from St. Felix has less elevation gain compared to the ascent from Tret.
Roadbook
By car, you reach the locality Plaze di Tret, which is located just beyond the village of Fondo in the direction of Passo Palade. Along the main road, you will notice a junction on the right with signs for Lago di Tret. Take the paved road that leads up to the large roadside parking area.
From the parking lot, continue along the initially paved road, which after the last houses becomes a dirt road. After a few minutes of walking, you will see a path on the left with the classic yellow-white trail markers that leave the dirt road to enter the forest. After about a hundred meters, the path crosses the dirt road traveled at the beginning and then continues into the shade of the forest. At this point, there are clear signs for path 512 towards Lago di Tret. The path gradually rises with some slightly steep sections and a surface sometimes uneven due to stones and roots. As you advance towards the lake, the path crosses the dirt road several times, which also leads to the lake but takes a much longer route.
The last section of the route unfolds steeply along the dirt road, which then gently descends towards the lake. Our itinerary skirts the sparkling lake along the left shore and then makes a full circuit. Along the shores are meadows, some benches, and two piers where you can stop to relax or take a dip. At first glance, the waters do not seem clear, but the quality and purity of the water are certified as excellent!
After a well-deserved break and a visit to the nearby Malga di San Felice or the Rifugio Waldruhe, you can prepare for the return along the same route taken uphill.
You then go down and return to the starting point.
Near the parking lot is the small Albergo Scoiattolo. Its terrace immersed in the woods and the excellent cakes are a worthy finale to a wonderful day in close contact with nature!
