Where the wild, narrow Van Noana finally opens out, you’ll find the Rifugio Fonteghi, in an area between the Dolomiti Bellunese National Park (to the south) and the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park (to the north). People (also) come here to go canyoning in the extraordinary gorges carved out by the Rio Neva. The refuge was built in the late fifties, when the dam that created the artificial lake was built, and has been recently renovated with the addition of a large veranda. The food encompasses local dishes, ancient recipes and zero-miles ingredients, such as vegetables from the refuge’s garden. Attention is given to wellbeing and the environment, even in the rooms, where the heating system is in the walls, which are made of ecological materials.
