Climbs of Giro d’Italia –Sella Pass
The ascent to Sella Pass is one of the most coveted targets for cyclists from all over the world. There’s a total of 23 hairpin turns to deal with ‘till the Dolomites pass, reachable after 12 km and 800 m of elevation gain (average gradient 6,9%, with peaks up to 13%).
From the centre of Canazei, take the state road 48 (S.S. 48). From the very first turns, there’s a gradient of 5,8%, which touches 7,6% by the third kilometre. Get past the resort of Pian de Frataces (Lupo Bianco) and turn left at the crossroads. The route alternates wide and well-designed turns, flat stretches, narrow and close hairpin turns, long straightaways and uphill stretches with a steep gradient. This pass, overlooked by an imposing stone castle, connects Val di Fassa with Val Gardena. It has been “Cima Coppi” of Giro d’Italia twice, meaning it’s the highest ascent faced during a “pink race” edition.
Return along the same route or possibility to continue towards Val Gardena, following Sellaronda Bike Day’s or Marathona dles Dolomites’ itineraries.
