Along Mancabrot Ridge And To Lake Montesel
A walk of great naturalistic, historical, and archeological interest. The route leads from a landscape of ancient volcanic rock (i.e. the porphyry of the Mancabrot ridge) to terrain made up of relatively young rock of marine origin on Monte Corona. Archeological finds attest to early Bronze Age settlements, and from the presence of copper, lead and silver ore, it can be assumed that minerals were mined in the area in very ancient times.
The departure and arrival place of this ring route is the car park (fountain, information board) of the civic centre of Valternigo (municipality of Giovo) at an altitude of about 650 m/2,133 ft. There are many places of environmental, historical and archeological interest along the route which meanders along the various pine-covered hills making up the Mancabrot ridge. The destination of the walk, called 'Lago Montesel', is in fact a small and nice wetland area located within a wood (Bosco Maric, 812 m). From there, the route takes you down to a pass called 'Pian del Lac', another marshy area with apple orchards and meadows where it's not uncommon to chance upon grazing red deer or roe deer. From there, a pleasant path meandering through various plantations takes you back to the starting place. The overall distance is about 4.5 km/2.8 miles, and the difference in height amount sto less than 200 m/656 ft: this walk is therefore within the reach of most people and takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete (allowing for a few brief stops at panoramic spots and other places of interest, but irrespective of any longer stops you may wish to make in order to have a closer look at sights).
