The Marcesina plain was for centuries a border land between Venice and Austria, at a time when livestock farmers competed with each other for precious mountain pastures. In the middle of this plateau, where it’s still possible to follow the path along the boundary stones, is the Rifugio Barricata. Go in summer to have fun mountain biking, and return in winter (with snowshoes or cross-country skis) to find out if this area really does deserve its nickname - Italy’s Finland - due to the very severe temperatures that regularly occur as a result of the basin conformation of the whole area. Humans have chosen to live here since prehistoric times, as borne out by the archaeological remains to be found at the Rifugio Dalmeri.

Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut

Walks
Close to the refuge is the Riparo Dalmeri, a prehistoric rock shelter, which has been studied by the Trento Science Museum and which provides evidence of hunting activity in this area 13,000 years ago. The Sentiero dei Cippi (Boundary Stone Path) winds across the Marcesina plain along a line that once marked the border between the Republic of Venice and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A walk of 1 hour 40 minutes takes you to “Castelloni San Marco”, an amazing labyrinth of limestone rocks of karst origin (a path guides you through it).
