The Rifugio Capanna Punta Penia is not easy to get to: if you’ve come from the north you’ve crossed a glacier; from the west a via ferrata; if you’ve come from the south, well done - you’ve climbed one of the toughest faces in the Dolomites. This refuge is the ultimate destination: from here you can’t go any higher. You're on the summit of the Marmolada, the highest in the Dolomites. Your reward is an unsurpassed view over the Dolomites spread out below your feet. Sleeping up here on a windy night in this hut anchored to the rock with steel tie rods can be quite an experience, but you’ll find that at 3,300 metres you’ll often be waking up above the clouds. Open From May to early November Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks From the summit of the Marmolada, the highest in the Dolomites, it’s only possible, of course, to go down. But if you still have the energy (and above all mountaineering skills and suitable equipment) you can go along the Marmolada’s ridges to the slightly lower Punta Rocca (difficulty EEA), where the cable car arrives from Malga Ciapela.
