Ask someone to show you the strange rock formations, just beyond the Passo dei XII Apostoli, from which the mountain, the pass and the refuge get their name (“the 12 Apostles”). The refuge was built in the early 20th century in one of the most remote (and scenic) places in the Brenta with spectacular views of the Adamello and Presanella. Run for many years by the Salvaterra family, the refuge is currently owned by SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) and run by mountain guide Aldo Turri, who, with other guides, organises beginners’ climbing courses for his guests. Every year on the last Sunday in July all the fallen of the war in the mountains are remembered here in the picturesque little church carved into the rock. Open From 20 June to late September Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks All the walks from the refuge are challenging and require suitable equipment. The very difficult Castiglioni via ferrata goes to the Rifugio Silvio Agostini in Val d'Ambiez (2 ½ hours, difficulty EEA). You can get to the Rifugio Maria e Alberto Ai Brentei by way of the Daniele Martinazzi via ferrata, a very difficult 3-hour mountaineering route (difficulty EEA). Equally difficult are the Sentiero dell’Ideale path and the Brentari via ferrata to the Tosa and Tommaso Pedrotti refuges (3 hours).
