The Rifugio Melga Cianci is the first refuge you encounter when you walk up the Val Contrin from Alba da Canazei. It’s an obligatory stop for devotees of the local cuisine, the strong point of this refuge, which also offers guests a wide range of wines. When you eat on the terrace of this refuge - rebuilt in 2000 on the ruins of an old mountain farm destroyed by fire - you’re at the foot of Monte Colac and the Cirelle, and it is highly tempting to go higher up for a closer look at the vertical rock faces of the Marmolada Group. Open From mid-June to early October Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks The Rifugio Contrin is an easy walk from the Rifugio Melga Cianci (30 minutes, difficulty E). From there you can climb to the top of the Marmolada (Punta Penia) along the Cresta Ovest (west ridge) via ferrata (from Forcella Marmolada - 4 hours, difficulty EEA). Walking instead over Passo Ombretta, you can get to the Rifugio Falier at the foot of the south face of the Marmolada (2 ½ hours, difficulty EE). Other possible walks include to the Rifugio Fuchiade via Passo delle Cirelle (3 hours, difficulty E).

The refuge can be accessed on foot from the car park at the Alba di Canazei cable car station (in Pallua) on footpath 602 up Val Contrin and across the Rio Contrin torrent: 1 ½ hours (difficulty E).
