Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta - Villa Lagarina
Santa Maria Assunta was the symbol of Counts Lodron's power.
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Villa Lagarina is one of the foremost Baroque monuments in Trentino. First mentioned at the end of the 12th century, it underwent radical transformation between the 16th and 17th centuries by the Lodron family, when the original three-aisle Romanesque-Gothic church got turned into a single nave Baroque church. The important architectural improvements and the wealth of precious sacred furnishings - resulting from attentive and sophisticated patronage - upgraded the church to a symbol of the political and religious power of the family.
On the Northern side of the nave is the exquisite chapel of S. Ruperto, an artistic gem commissioned by Paride Lodron in 1629. It was designed by the Como architect Santino Solari, who also built the Cathedral of Salzburg, while the oil paintings on copper are by the Florentine artist Arsenio Mascagni.
