Alberi monumentali della Val di Fiemme
Re Leone, Maestro dei Pertegari and Colonne della Casaia. Discover Val di Fiemme's monumental trees.
Val di Fiemme features 60 million trees. Some of them are extraordinary for their height, others for the size of their trunks, their unusual shapes or their age. They are true natural monuments worth discovering, recognising and appreciating. Re Leone is the largest, with a ground circumference of 7.10 m, while Colonne della Casaia is the tallest, with a 52 m height. In terms of volume, Maestro dei Pertegari is the biggest of Val di Fiemme, while Re Leone is the oldest, with its 800 years.
Of the numerous valleys surrounding the River Avisio, Val Cadino is its wooded valley par excellence, and is covered with forests from the bottom to the top of its peaks. Every year, approximately 20,000 trees are cut down, but many more keep growing, and the forest has been expanding for decades. It is also a wind-swept valley. At the top, woods get very sparse, and each tree can take full advantage of the light available. This is where the valley shows its masterpieces, its natural monuments.
