STRADA DEI RUSSI (THE ROAD OF THE RUSSIANS) - VAL SAN NICOLÒ
Easy high-level walk

You can reach the Val San Nicolò (San Nicolò Valley) by shuttle bus service from Pozza di Fassa. From the place called Saùch cut through the strip of trees on the left to reach the track known as “Strada di Rusci” or the “Road of the Russians”. The name comes from the fact that it was Russian prisoners of war who built the road during WW1. The going is varied, but never steep, and the road is very well shaded all along the way. When you reach the waysign no. 641 for Lagusel (Lauscel) turn left and then cross the Ruf de Sèn Nicolò by way of a small bridge. Go into the woods to the left. You will descend slightly, cross an area of alluvial stones and then the bed of the Giaf stream, which can get dangerously big following summer thunderstorms. After a flat stretch you will join the dirt road which climbs up this last part of the valley. Turn left and go down to the Baita Ciampiè (1,826 m), where you can get refreshments, and then follow the asphalt road all the way back to the shuttle bus stop(2 hrs).
