Vervo' - Predaia

Exploring history and art on the Roman road and at the age-old church of S. Martino

Vervo' - Predaia #1

Vervò is located on a green terrace on the fringe of the Predaia Plateau. The town is very important from an archaeological point of view, since 17 different Roman inscriptions have been discovered here. It also features numerous frescoes depicting sacred images, sun dials and crests as well as small balconies and wooden tympani.
The town's origins hark back to the Romans. According to a Roman inscription, it was the seat of a "castellum" - Vervassium - and a garrison, which guarded the Roman road connecting Val di Non to Valle dell'Adige. The town of Vervò was the only venue to pass through for anyone who wished to avoid the wild waters and gorges of River Noce when travelling towards Predaia through the Anaunia, via the Sella Pass.
A picturesque road on the edge of the Pongaiola gorge takes visitors to the age-old church of S. Martino - rebuilt since the 16th century - which boasts several interesting historical-artistic features.
