To get to this refuge at the foot of the northern slope of Marmolada, you have to cross the dam, which has held back the waters flowing down from the glacier forming Lake Fedaia since 1955. If you’ve seen the film The Italian Job (the 2003 version) you will recognize the place: it was here, on the wall of the dam at over 2000 metres above sea level, that one of the main action scenes was filmed in the heart of a very snowy winter. A little further on is the Soraruf family’s Rifugio Dolomia where, while waiting to ascend the glacier (or to simply stroll around the lake), you can visit the small museum commemorating the Great War and discover the secrets of this wild mountain pass between the Valle di Fassa (Trentino) and Agordino (Belluno). Open From 20 June to 20 September Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks From the Refuge you can embark on the climb to the summit of the Marmolada, 3343 m, from the north side, a mountaineering route to be undertaken with a mountain guide: take the cable car to Pian dei Fiacconi (2633 metres) then proceed in a rope team with ice axes and crampons over the glacier, up the easy rock (grade 1) of the northern ridge and finally along the snowy summit ridge (3 ½ hours, difficulty EEA). On the opposite side of the valley, you can walk up to the Rifugio Viel dal Pan, 2432 metres, on footpath no. 601 in 1 ¾ hours, then continue on the protected path along the trenches and the Padon ridges (3 ¾ hours, difficulty F). Even a simple walk around Lake Fedaia can be enchanting, especially at sunset when Monte Civetta turns pink and is reflected in the water.
