GHIACCIAIO MARMOLADA

A little further up from the cable car that runs from Passo Fedaia to Pian dei Fiacconi is the Rifugio Ghiacciaio Marmolada, among the smooth rocks that are evidence of the retreat of the ice (which is now much higher up). The terrace of the refuge - built in the seventies, with a stunning view of the Sella Group, Sassolungo and Lake Fedaia - gives a foretaste of the view to be enjoyed on reaching the top of the Marmolada. Near the refuge, the summer melt waters form a tiny lake and a nearby observation point helps walkers identify the surrounding peaks.

Walks
Rifugio Ghiacciaio Marmolada is the start of the climb to Punta Penia (highest peak of Marmolada) which can be reached in 3 ½ hours taking the normal route across the glacier (requires mountaineering skills and should be undertaken with a mountain guide). The summit can also be reached through the (difficult) West Ridge via ferrata (3 ½ hours) beginning at Forcella Marmolada (from where it is also possible to cross to Rifugio Contrin).
