Castle of Avio
The FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano [Italian Environmental Fund] welcomes you to the Vallagarina vineyards
Following a narrow paved road through the vineyards, you come to the Romanesque tower, entrance to the upper castle. Laying on the hills on the right bank of the Adige river the Castle, with its mighty battlements, has been dominating the lower Vallagarina for centuries.
The Avio castle is run by FAI and participates in its initiatives, such as the FAI Spring Days. In summer many activities are organised for families: fun workshops, courtly dances, play routes.
The castle consists in a large complex that includes the 11th century stronghold, five towers, the baronial palace and the 13th century walls.
Inside, you can visit the Chamber of Eros, decorated with courtly style frescoes: a man pierced through the heart by a spear, a lady with a little dog – symbol of fidelity – and Eros blindfolded with bow and arrows. Next to it, the baronial palace remains, the “Picadora” Tower and the Guards House, enriched by an extraordinary cycle of 14th century frescoes depicting military scenes.
