Stenico Castle

Between art and history

Stenico Castle looms high over the Outer Giudicarie area, once acting as a concrete symbol of the power that the Prince Bishops of Trento held over these valleys too.

The castle was owned by the Prince Bishops of Trento from the 12th century onwards, acting as the place of residence for the captain who governed the surrounding territory. This link with the centre of power is also alluded to in one of the frescoes of the Ciclo dei Mesi (Cycle of the Months) in Torre Aquila in Trento. The fresco in which ladies and knights play with snowballs includes a depiction of Stenico Castle itself.

In addition to the San Martino Chapel, with its 13th century frescoes, it is also worth visiting the suite of furnished rooms, the archaeological section, and the invaluable collection of inlaid furniture, frescoes and ancient weapons from the Museum at Trento’s Buonconsiglio Castle, of which this manor is an outpost.
