Gothic architecture in a charming panoramic location
The small panoramic Church of St Thomas in Cavedago is located at an altitude of 900, in the old part of the town, surrounded by a small cemetery.
It dates back to mid-1300s and is Gothic in design but with late Romanesque influences. The roof has a steep slope and there is a Bell Tower with a Ghibelline spire with 4 Romanesque triple lancet windows. The main façade has a gateway dating from the Renaissance period complete with frescoes dating back to the construction of the Church. Inside the Gothic style triumphs with vaulted ceilings and a polygonal apse, there are also numerous frescoes from the 14th century by lesser known painters.
In the early 20th century the Church was damaged by a fire that destroyed the roof and made the building structurally unsound. The Church has been restored between 1999 and 2002; during this period the evocative wooden altarpiece depicting St Thomas by the sculptor Egidio Petri of Segonzano was created.
It is open to visitors in summer and only by appointment only in winter.
