Calceranica Mining Park

Today the old mine is a park open to visits

Calceranica Mining Park
Parco Minerario di Calceranica

After being closed for over forty years the pyrites mine of Calceranica, renowned since Medieval times, is now a park open to visitors: in the 20th Century, up to 1964, it represented an important economical resource for the community, and today it is once again visitable. The park, which was inaugurated on 29th July 2008, is also a way to remember the many people who worked there, some of whom lost their lives in the mine. The tunnel features the presence of original equipment and materials from the mining civilization thus offering a modern, multi-faceted theme park achieved with the collaboration of the Natural Science Museum of Trento.
The entrance to the mine is close to the centre of Calceranica. The entrance point to the Leyla tunnel, the main tunnel, is in a vaster area which was once used only for the processing of the extracted materials. The network of tunnels, about forty kilometres long, wound through the bowels of the mountain, extending up to the inhabited areas of Bosentino and Vattaro, and today is still mostly inaccessible and cannot be explored. Restoration works have been carried out in the heart of the mining area but only a few of the places which were the fulcrum of all the mining activity related to the pyrite veins of Mandola for many centuries have been brought back to their original splendour. A welcome and information point and a display and museum area are accessible in a restored building in the Campregher complex.

The park is located in via della Miniera, which can be reached, on foot too, from the center of Calceranica al Lago.

2019 opening hours: from July to 13th September from Thursday to Sunday

Guided visit starting time: in the afternoon at 15.00 - 15.45 - 16.30 -17.15
