Oasi di Valtrigona
The Valtrigona wildlife sanctuary is located high up in the mountains, where numerous species of flora and fauna live undisturbed.
This is the only Wwf wildlife sanctuary in the Alps. Located in a side valley off the main Val Calamento, at the foot of the Lagorai range, it covers an area of 236 hectares and is crossed by a renowned Nature trail (see below), through larch and cembran pine forests, at altitudes of between 1,600 and 2,200 metres, including the Valtrigona Valley and the orographic left flank of the Val Scartazza Valley. The old Alpine dairies located inside the area have been refurbished and some are now used to house facilities belonging to the wildlife sanctuary, while others serve the purpose of boosting what remains of the livestock breeding and cheese-making activities once widespread in the area. To reach the wildlife sanctuary follow the provincial main road through the village of Telve, towards the Manghen Pass, for about 15 km. From Valtrighetta continue on foot, on trail 374, which leads to the Bocchetta d'Ezze.
Inaugurated in 1997, the trail is actually an open-air nature museum, which can be visited from June to October, with conifer forests, mountain meadows and rare wildlife species, such as the common frog, capercaillie, ptarmigan, golden eagle, great spotted woodpecker, chamois, fox and ermine. To see these animals in the wild it is sufficient to prick up your ears and keep your eyes peeled, without having to leave the main path, so as not to unduly disturb the natural environment.
