This route starts at the Santa Massenza hydroelectric power station and passes Lake Toblino, Sarche, Lake Cavedine, Madruzzo, and Lake Santa Massenza. While on this tour, you will also get to admire two beautiful castles: Toblino Castle, which is located on a peninsula in the Toblino Lake, and Madruzzo Castle, which is perched above the village of the same name. In addition to the various lakes that you will come across during your ride, there is also sprawling countryside that is home to the vines grown to make famous Vino Santo. This tour also offers numerous wine tasting options at local wineries. Once you reach Lake Cavedine, you will head towards Lasino and then Madruzzo to enter Val di Cavedine. From here, you will continue through vineyards and charming villages before returning to Padergone and eventually finishing the route by following Lake Santa Massenza round in the direction of the hydroelectric power station. In Santa Massenza you will also get the chance to sample and purchase some local grappa.

    Author’s recommendation

We recommend stopping off at one of the wine cellars along the way to sample some delicious local wines. Make sure to try some famous Vino Santo!

    Roadbook

This tour starts in Santa Massenza (250 m.a.s.l.), near the car park south of the town. The route initially heads towards Lake Toblino. After passing Castel Toblino, you will reach the village of Sarche via the SS-45bis road.  At the beginning of the village, take the road on the left immediately after the first house into the countryside and then take Via del Leccio on the right, which continues into Via Giardini. At the end, take a left onto Via Madruzzo, turn the corner at the cemetery, and continue south until you cross the SP-214. Turn left here in the direction of Ponte Oliveti, following the signs for Pergolese. At the first bridge, take the dirt road on the left, which will lead you through vineyards into a small town square in Pergolese (250 m.a.s.l.). Take the main road to the left and follow the bends. Pass the junction with the SP-214 Pietramurata and keep left along Via dei Casoni, climbing up to 290 metres above sea level before starting your descent. Keep to the left (275 m.a.s.l.) along the tarmacked road, which leads down the side of the mountain and meets at the hairpin bend of another wider road. Take a left uphill, cycle past the hairpin bend and continue uphill until you get to a fork in the road. Turn left here on to Via Pinè (510 m.a.s.l.). The road descends gently, remaining at altitude, on the same side of the mountain, in a northerly direction, for 2 kilometres. When you reach the wider paved road that leads from Pergolese, turn right and, after passed a few hairpin bends, head up to the crossing point, which is marked with a stone cross (505 m.a.s.l.). You will soon reach San Siro Church. Descend to the right-hand bend before leaving the main road that heads to Lasino to take another tarmacked road. Cycle through the countryside until you reach SP-251 near Castel Madruzzo (425 m.a.s.l.). Turn left onto SP-251 until you reach the first large bend, where you will take a right onto a tarmacked road. At the first junction, take a left, pass the capital (straight ahead) and stone cross (on your left) and head north until you reach the first few houses on Via a Palù in the town of Calavino.  Take the road on the left when you reach the fork. After two hairpin bends, you will reach Corgnon Church (400 m.a.s.l.). Turn right immediately after the church and follow the road through the vineyards and along the forest, which will lead you past a wide bend and through to some crossroads. Take a right and begin the rapid descent past the fish farm until you reach the village of Padergnone (250 m.a.s.l.). Take the right-hand road and at the roundabout, take the underpass to the SS-45bis, which will allow you to cycle in the opposite direction. After a few metres on the state road, take the small road on the right at the first hotel and continue until you reach Santa Massenza Lake. Cycle past the canal and under the SS-45bis until you enter the village of Padergnone on the way to the lake. Turn left here onto Via del Ponte, in the direction of Santa Massenza. Take the SS-45bis. Alongside the hydroelectric plant, turn right on to Via del Vai (250 m.a.s.l.) and at the bend, turn right onto the tarmacked road that leads north into the countryside, until it joins Via di Maiano, which leads to the town of Santa Massenza and the departure point.

    Equipment

Riding your bike requires specific clothing and equipment, even for relatively short and easy trips. It is always better to be prepared… e.g. for bad weather or a sudden drop in your energy levels. The unexpected things are part of the fun!

Remember to thoroughly evaluate the type of route you plan on doing, the locations you intend to cross and the current season. Has it been raining? Attention: The paths may be slippery and require more caution.

    • Plenty of snacks (for example, dried fruit or energy bars)

    • Bike lights: best placed on your helmet or handlebars. (It is always best to be prepared)
