The Tonale Peatbog is a vast boggy hollow characterised by considerable environmental variety with an exceptional wealth of biodiversity. And that's exactly why this bog has become a protected nature area that is part of the «Rete Natura 2000», a network of nature protection areas that have been chosen and approved by the European Union. In addition to several carnivore plants, this area is home to a large number of plant species widespread throughout Arctic regions yet very rare in the Alps. It is the ideal habitat for many species of animals that live in wetland areas, mainly insects, amphibians and reptiles. Many of these animals are rare species like the dragonfly and the alpine newt. The woodland area near the peat bog is inhabited by numerous mammals like deer and roe deer, while wood grouse and black grouse can be found in the undergrowth.

A themed visitor route makes it easily accessible to everyone. The start of this route, where you will find an informative sign, is located at the end of Via San Bortolomeo near the parking area of the last apartment complex.

Opening Times: it can be visited all year round

The visitor centre is only open in the summer. Booking is required at other times of year. Guided visits available – booking required
