Fiavé's famous lake-dwellings have been discovered here, and endowed the area with international recognition as a leading archaeological site. Fiavé biotope has been established for the great naturalistic value of the area, with its extraordinarily articulated and exceptionally interesting vegetation.

As a result of land's changing conditions, a huge variety of different plants use to grow here, some of which are also particularly rare. The vegetation of the swamp - featuring reed thickets and carex - alternates with low peat bogs, wet meadows, and swampy woods holding silver grey willows and alder buckthorn. Water-lilies teem almost every pool.

The biotope's lush landscape is one with its rich and multifarious wildlife. Fiavé peat bogs are an important breeding ground for amphibians, such as common toads, green frogs and mountain frogs. Numerous nesting water birds can also be spotted here, including mallards, yellow wagtails, marsh warblers, reed buntings, great reed warblers and reed buntings.
