Buonconsiglio Castle
An immersion in history, an absolute must for anyone visiting Trento
With its marvellous frescoes and crenellated towers, this is the most important castle in Trentino. After centuries as the seat of the prince bishops, today it is home to provincial collections of art and archaeology.
Frescoed halls, arcades overlooking the city, imposing towers... you are standing in front of the most important castle in Trentino. Until 1803, it was the residence of the prince bishops, the lords of Trento, while during the First World War, it gained tragic notoriety following the execution of the Italian patriot and irredentist Cesare Battisti in its courtyard. Today, its halls play host to numerous collections of art and archaeology in addition to important temporary exhibits, while the garden offers a chance to take a relaxing break and make use of the Wi-Fi. There is a packed schedule of educational activities, workshops and events offered for schools.
PS: Don’t forget to visit the Torre Aquila, or Eagle Tower, whose walls are frescoed with the famous International Gothic masterpiece Ciclo dei Mesi (Cycle of the Months).
