Chiesa di San Rocco
The small church, dedicated to Saints Rocco and Sebastiano, contains frescoes by the Bergamo Baschenis of Averaria
A little church, set amongst the streets of San Lorenzo in Banale, one of “The Most Beautiful villages in Italy” (“I Borghi più belli d’Italia”) at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites. Dedicated to San Rocco, the building, connected to the bell tower, is entirely finished in stone. Its exterior façade is amazingly simple, while inside there are fine frescoes by Cristoforo II Baschenis. The painted characters are seated on different, uniquely shaped, thrones. At the centre of the vaulting is the bust of Christ, who is blessing people and who, as the ‘Divine Teacher’, supervises the holy saints while they perform their duties, just like teacher does with his pupils. It is called an easy-to-read painting, with just a few colours, but with a great chromatic effect. The church was built after the plague in 1578. It is always open in summer.
