Cavalese
Sport and leisure in the heart of Val di Fiemme
In the heart the Val di Fiemme lies Cavalese, a jewel set among the Dolomites, where you can relax among ancient palaces and practise your favourite sports in both summer and winter.
Where to find it
We are 1,000 metres above sea level, about 60 kilometres from Trento. In the heart of the beautiful Val di Fiemme, Cavalese is spread over a sunny terrace right opposite the Lagorai range. The town has 4,000 inhabitants who, in summer and winter, welcome thousands of tourists, who spend their holidays among relaxation and seasonal sports here every year.
What to do
If you are in search of an unforgettable high-elevation experience, we suggest taking the Alpe Cermis cableway. When you reach the top, the view over the valley is something exceptional. From here, numerous trails begin for those who love hiking. One particularly beautiful route is the Giro della cascate di Cavalese [tour of the waterfalls of Cavalese], a walk through the woods between a monumental fir tree, a lively stream, and pebbles painted with moss and lichens.
And if you are travelling with children, in the hamlet of Doss dei Laresi (at 1,280 m asl), you will find Cermislandia, a fun amusement park among the mountains of Trentino, with free entry. Also for the children, but in the heart of Cavalese, is the Parco della Pieve.
In addition, we suggest you try the excitement of rafting and canyoning on the Avisio river. Thanks to the support of qualified instructors, you can climb onboard an inflatable dinghy, navigate on the river, and then dive into the clear and clean waters typical of a mountain stream. A truly adrenaline-inducing experience.
Don’t miss the opportunity to walk through the town of Cavalese. You can take a stroll through the historical centre: you will find the shop windows of craft and clothing stores, pubs, wine bars, a disco, and renowned restaurants and historical buildings like the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, with the witch prisons which are currently home to the picture gallery, and the Contemporary Art Centre.
In winter, skiing enthusiasts will find numerous downhill and cross-country tracks, like the Marcialonga ones. For those who do not ski, in the town there are modern sports facilities like the Palaghiaccio [ice skating rink] and the municipal swimming pool with jacuzzi, open in both summer and winter.
Among the events in Cavalese, let’s not forget the Christmas Markets, the Desmontegada de le caore, and the Farmers Market. Finally, gourmet palates can dedicate a few days to visiting the numerous farmsteads and dairies, to taste the cold meats and cheeses typical of the valley.
How to get there
Those travelling by car can reach Cavalese by taking the Egna/Ora exit from motorway A22 Modena/Brennero, and then following the SS 48 Statale delle Dolomiti to Cavalese. By train, you can stop in Trento and continue by Trentino Trasporti bus line, which connects Val di Fiemme with the regional capital.
