Cembra
A renowned traditional vine-growing and wine-making centre
A well-known town with ancient origins, Cembra is located on a wide, sunny terrace at the heart of the valley bearing its name, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape.
Its valley carved by the torrent Avisio is covered with the characteristic terraces grown with vines, from which famous Trentino wines such as Pinot Nero, Schiava and Müller Thurgau are manufactured. The Reto-Etruscan "situla" which was discovered in Cembra is the symbol of local wine-making.
The Cantina della Valle di Cembra is the winery located at the highest altitude of Italy, and manufactures renowned Müller Thurgau wine, for which the Rassegna dei Müller-Thurgau dell'Arco Alpino - a special Alpine-area festival to celebrate that unique wine - is organised every year. The town features both noble palaces and rural districts. The Gothic church of San Pietro, showcasing a number of frescoes as well as the remains of a wooden triptych from the 17th century, is located in its historic town-centre.
Lake Santo lies near the town and is surrounded by thick woods. On his way to Venice at the end of the 15th century, famous German artist Albrecht Dürer stopped here and painted several celebrated watercolour landscapes. The Sentiero del Dürer - the path crossing the heights of Tyrol Lower Atesina and Valle di Cembra - is dedicated to him.
