Mezzocorona

An age-old town on the banks of River Noce, Mezzocorona is located North of Trento in the Piana Rotalina plain, which is considered the most beautiful vineyard in Europe. Vines in the area are traditionally grown using the so-called "Trentino trellis" or "vertical-trellis" system. Weather and land are the secrets behind the refined, well-balanced, full-bodied wines of the region.

Tourists are recommended to visit the remains of a late Roman farm located near the huge Cantine Mezza Corona, a true Cittadella del Vino (wine hamlet) featuring tools, tales and memorabilia about wine-manufacturing, which proves the century-long winemaking tradition of the area.

The "Monte" overlooking the town is an ideal spot for walks and tours, both on foot and by mountain-bikes. It can be reached by cableway, or on a walker-friendly path or by taking the aided rock-climbing trail along the striking Giovannelli ravine. The Monte is an indisputable oasis of peace and tranquillity, as well a perfect picnic location.
Perched on the Monte as it is, Castel San Gottardo is almost inaccessible. It is also one of the most striking examples of Medieval architecture inside a "grotto" or under the rock. The majestic 15th century Castel Firmian is located at the foot of the Monte. This castle formerly housed the Firmian dynasty, which had brought another ancient palace - now headquarter of the Municipal offices - to the height of their glory. It also hosts several noteworthy frescoes ascribed to Tyrolese painter Paul Troger.

A special mention goes to the plaque on the facade of the Bishopric Church bellower, which represents the Om de Fèr (iron man) - the legendary killer of the basilisk (in fact, it is Leonardo von Kronmetz's tombstone, nephew of Osvald von Wolkenstein, famous poet and troubadour).
