Castel Dante, the remembrance shrine

A place that celebrates unknown soldiers and famous commanders

Over the ruins of the medieval castle of the Lords of Lizzana stands an imposing neoclassical monument dedicated to the fallen of World War I.

A massive cylinder covered with a metal dome, inspired by classical architecture, towers over an imposing stand of concentric tiers: this is the Military Memorial of Castel Dante in Rovereto, built in 1936 to guard the remains of over 20 thousand soldiers from the First World War: Italians, Austrians, Czechs, Slovaks and Hungarians.

Its central opening conveys natural light to the crypt containing the bust of Guglielmo Pecori Girardi, commander of the First Italian Army, who stopped the Austrian offensive of 1916. On the ground floor, a plaque dedicated to the Golden Medal holders of the Trentino Legion, in front of which a bronze tripod was placed, with a perpetual lamp.
