Fierozzo
Discover traditional Alpine farmhouses set in amazing wilderness
Fierozzo is a town comprising two outlaying administrative divisions - San Felice ("Indervlarotz" in Mocheno language) and San Francesco ("Auservlarotz") located on the left-hand side of the Valle dei Mòcheni, and overlooked by two peaks of over 2000 meters high: the Fravòrt and the Gronlàit. Mòcheno is an ancient language of German origin spoken in the area, brought in by the colonisers who first reached the valley. The Istituto Cuturale Mòcheno took care of refurbishing the rural-housing complex of Filzerhof for its great ethnographic worth.
The area is perfect for mountain excursions at any time of the year, which can be enjoyed either on foot, by mountain-bike, on horseback and also by wearing snowshoes or cross-country skis during the winter. In spring, the woods surrounding the town turn the colour of blooming cheery and chestnut trees, while autumn is marked by an explosion of red and yellow hues. Visitors will find it almost impossible to resist temptation to taste traditional dishes served in local trattorias and farmhouses.
Starting from Fierozzo San Francesco, visitors can climb up to the foot of the Gronlàit, next to a few typical Alpine farmhouses with their sloping wooden roofs to reach Prati Impreriali and its enchanting meadows and woods. From here, follow the trail to Valcava and enjoy its magic tapestry of golden larches in autumn.
The ancient tradition of the Stella is repeated once a year on New Year's night, when a star is carried from home to home to symbolise the coming of the Magi.
