Lake Lavarone - On Freud’s footsteps
The charm of a small lake of very ancient origins
Sports areas, well equipped both in summer and winter, make the lake and its surroundings an interesting destination for sports lovers. Not far away is the fortress hosting a First World War museum.
In the early 20th century Sigmund Freud used to stay long weeks in Lavarone. He loved to collect himself and meditate on the shores of this small lake of karstic origin, one of the most ancient in the whole of Trentino. On its bed, just 17 m down, you can still see the fossil remains of an ancient spruce tree wood, while nature and the landscape all around convey peace and serenity.
The lake, awarded with the European Blue Flag 2021, offers two beaches complete with facilities where you can swim and rent rowboats and pedal boats.
A real gem, popular both in summer, for swimming, and in winter, when it turns into an ice sheet, perfect for skating.
The lake surroundings offer opportunities for walking, horse riding, mountain biking, climbing, free flight and much more; in winter the place becomes a paradise for cross country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding.
Worth a visit is Forte Belvedere Gschwent, an Austro-Hungarian fortress still in excellent conditions, hosting the First World War museum.
