Valle dei Mocheni
An enchanted valley with many natural and historic attractions and traditions, inhabited by the Mòcheni, a community of German origin
The Valle dei Mòcheni is the German language island in Trentino. It is also known as the enchanted valley because of its magnificent scenery; fascinating in all seasons, with trails through fields and woods surrounded by the almost 2400 metre high peaks of the eastern section of the Lagorai range. From Palù del Fersina visitors can admire the breathtaking view over the Valsugana valley below. The most scenic spots in the area are Lake Erdemolo, at 2000 metres, which can be reached with a 2 hour hike.
Just over 20 km from Trento, the Valle dei Mòcheni also attracts visitors because of the culture and traditions of its inhabitants, a German language community that moved here in the Middle Ages, attracted by the gold, pyrite and quartz mines. Numerous legends and stories have originated from these historic events. Local attractions include the Museum of the Valle dei Mòcheni/Bernstol and the mine Grua va Hardombl, where visitors can still see the marks left by the knappen (miners) who used to work there. There are numerous mountain refuges and farmhouses in the area, and you can visit Maso Filzerhof, an original ‘mòchen' house dating back to the 15th century. Other attractions include the old watermill at Frassilongo/Garait.
